From the Barbastro - Huesca road (N 240), about 25 km after Barbastro, turn right onto the A 1229 towards Abiego, Rodellar. A few hundred meters after Abiego, turn left towards Bierge. A few meters before reaching the village of Bierge, turn right and then immediately left towards Rodellar ('Bco. de Mascun'). After approximately 10 km, you come to a saddle where a dirt road branches off to the right in a northerly direction at a sign for 'Barranco Fondo 840 m' (large waste garbage cans). We follow it, cross a plateau (which offers good views and an overview), then descend slightly to the Collado de Colmenares (approx. 2.5 km from the start of the track). We park the car on the saddle at the latest (also if you walk the Balcés Oscuros).

Approche (2 h 30): traduction alternative ➜

We follow the track. At the first hairpin bend, the path to Balcés Oscuros turns off in a southerly direction. However, we stay on the track and follow it to its exit. We continue along the adjoining path and reach the ridge at 1320 m above sea level (approx. 1.25 hours from the car) and the path continues along the ridge, albeit slightly below it on its eastern flank. The path branches off at a cairn (approx. 15 minutes after crossing the ridge). Turn left (westwards) up to the Collado de Balcéd (1371 m above sea level - you can also ascend there from Rodellar), but we go down to the right into the western flank of the Balcés, first eastwards in several serpentines downhill until the path turns northwards at about 1200 m above sea level. It crosses two branches of the Bco. A Lera. After the second branch, the path heads back towards it (in an easterly direction). Now you path down the Bco. A Lera (alternative 1) down to the Rio Isuala. Although there is also a path to the north of La Glera and almost parallel to it (above the lower break in the wall) leading down to the river in an easterly direction (alternative 2), you should only look for and take this if you are sure of your bearings.

We hike, wade and swim down the river. A tremendous landscape experience. After about 3.5 hours, 2 longer narrow sections, after passing through a chaos of rocks and two short narrow sections (one immediately after the other), you reach a striking flat meadow area (with bushes) to the right of the river. The path that leads to the entry of Balcés Oscuros comes down here.

Retour (45 min): traduction alternative ➜

We can now walk up it and get to the car after about 1 hour or we (if still fit and time available) cross the Balcés Oscuros in 2 hours (then the emergency rope is not enough!) and at the exit pull right up to the car in 30 minutes.
