Die Schlucht kann sowohl über einen rechten als auch einen linken Zulauf (Zeiten und Höhenmeter in Klammern) begangen werden. Während man beim rechten Zulauf teilweise mit dem Auto rauffahren kann muss man beim linken Zulauf den ganzen Weg bis zum Einstieg zu Fuß auf einer Forststraße hinauf gehen. Der Rechte Zulauf ist zwar landschaftlich sehr schön, hat aber sehr viele lange Gehstrecken. Der linke Zulauf hingegen hat nur eine längere Gehstrecke zwischendrin und man kommt gleich zu einer interessanten Engstelle des oberen Teils. Beide Zuläufe sind auf alle Fälle lohnenswert. Der obere Teil besticht durch seine schöne Landschaft und Geologie ist aber sicher nicht so anspruchsvoll (bis auf 2 Stellen) wie der untere Teil der Ochsenschlucht.

Beim Bahnhof in Berg an der Drau fährt man über die Brücke, die über die Drau führt. Hier bleibt man auf der Straße für ca. 2km bis zu einer Abzweigung, an welcher man rechts in Richtung "Radlerstation Sandhof" abbiegt. Hier fährt man noch ca. für 150m weiter auf der Straße, überquert dabei den Bach der Ochsenschlucht (Feistritz), ehe links – direkt nach dem Bach – der Parkplatz auftaucht (Picknickplatz). Hier kann man die Fahrzeuge mit den trockenen Sachen parken. Generell sollte der Parkplatz genutzt werden um die Mehrzahl der Autos dort abzustellen. Am oberen Parkplatz ist die Parkplatzanzahl limitiert (2 PKW). WICHTIG: Bevor die Schlucht begangen wird muss um Erlaubnis gefragt werden (Am besten am Vortag). Hierfür bei Mario Duller von Ares Canyoning anrufen (+43 676 844425280; office@bikeschule.at). Mario hat die Schlucht gepachtet und kennt den Bauern über dessen Grund die private Zufahrtsstraße geht! Wasserkontrolle: Direkt beim Sandhof führt rechts die Straße bergauf. Nach ca 500m führt rechts eine Schotterstraße bergabwärts, die durch einen großen Baumstamm versperrt ist. Hier aussteigen und bis zur Wehranlage des Baches gehen für die Wasserkontrolle. Es bringt nichts unteren Parkplatz am Bach die Kontrolle durchzuführen, weil bei der Wehranlage das Wasser abgeleitet wird! Ein Referenzfoto des Wasserstandes unserer Begehung findet man weiter unten, hierbei handelt es sich um den „Normalwasserstand“, der aber schon bei der einen oder anderen Stelle fordernd werden kann. Alternativ kann man beim unteren Parkplatz für ca. 15 min in Richtung Schlucht wandern, eher man auch bei der Wehranlage ist und gemäß der Referenzfotos das Wasser kontrollieren kann. Anfahrt rechter Zulauf (rote Tour auf Topo) Ist der Wasserstand ok, fährt man die Straße für ca 3,5km bergaufwärts. Nach einigen Serpentinen im Wald kommt man bei einer Alm raus wo man sich noch rechts hält. Man fährt nochmal kurz in den Wald ehe man dann wieder bei der Alm rauskommt und man direkt am Bauernhof und einem Rotwildgehege vorbei fährt. Die asphaltierte Straße geht über in einen Schotterweg, der weiter hangaufwärts führt. Man fährt wieder in den Wald, bei Abbiegungen hält man sich rechts, eher man nach 2000m zu einem Schranken kommt. Man sollte vor dem Schranken irgendwo parken, da danach die Bundesforste anfangen und die Straße nicht befahren werden darf.

At the train station in Berg an der Drau, cross the bridge over the Drau. Stay on the road for approx. 2km until you reach a junction where you turn right towards "Radlerstation Sandhof". Continue on the road for approx. 150m, crossing the stream of the Ochsenschlucht (Feistritz), before the parking lot (picnic area) appears on the left - directly after the stream. Here you can park your vehicle with your dry clothes. In general, the parking lot should be used to park the majority of cars. The number of parking spaces at the upper parking lot is limited (2 cars). IMPORTANT: Permission must be requested before entering the canyon (preferably the day before). To do this, call Mario Duller from Ares Canyoning (+43 676 844425280; office@bikeschule.at). Mario has leased the canyon and knows the farmer over whose land the private access road runs! Water control: Directly at the Sandhof farm, the road leads uphill to the right. After approx. 500m, a gravel road leads downhill to the right, which is blocked by a large tree trunk. Get out here and walk to the weir system of the stream for the water check. There is no point in checking the water at the lower parking lot by the stream because the water is diverted at the weir! A reference photo of the water level on our walk can be found below; this is the "normal water level", but it can be challenging at one point or another. Alternatively, you can hike from the lower parking lot for about 15 minutes in the direction of the canyon, before you reach the weir and can check the water according to the reference photos. Approach right inlet (red tour on topographic view) If the water level is ok, take the road uphill for approx. 3.5 km. After a few hairpin bends in the forest, you come out at a mountain pasture where you keep to the right. Drive briefly into the forest again before you come out at the mountain pasture again and drive past the farm and a deer enclosure. The asphalt road turns into a gravel path that continues uphill. You drive back into the forest, keeping to the right at junctions until you come to a barrier after 2000m. You should park somewhere before the barrier, as this is where the federal forest begins and the road may not be driven on.

Zustieg rechter Zulauf (rote Tour auf Topo): 30min Man folgt der Forststraße für ca. 30 min ehe die Straße direkt über den rechten Zulauf führt. Achtung es gibt ca 5min vor dem Einstieg noch einen großen Zulauf (der aber unter der Forststraße hindurch geleitet wird). Das ist noch nicht der Einstieg sondern dieser kommt erst 5min später. Zustieg linker Zulauf (blaue Tour auf Topo): 2h Vom unteren Parkplatz or. links dem Wanderweg/Forststraße 233 aufwärts folgen (Fahrverbot), bis unterhalb von einer kleinen Hütte auf ca. 1160hm in der ersten Kehre ein schmaler Pfad direkt in die Schlucht hinab führt. (Angenehmer als der frühere, auch im Topo eingezeichnete, Zustieg über ein Geröllfeld.)

Access right access (red tour on topographic view): 30min Follow the forest road for about 30 minutes before the road leads directly over the right access. Attention, there is a large inlet about 5 minutes before the entry (but it is led under the forest road). This is not yet the entry but comes 5 minutes later. Access left access (blue tour on topographic view): 2h From the lower parking lot or left follow the hiking trail/forest road 233 uphill (no driving) until below a small hut at approx. 1160m in the first hairpin bend a narrow path leads directly down into the canyon. (More pleasant than the earlier access via a boulder field, which is also marked in the topographic view).

Tourenbeschreibung rechter Zulauf bis Zusammenfluss: ca. 1,75h Der rechte Zulauf ist charakterisiert durch eine sehr schön offene Wanderschlucht mit ein paar Abseilern drinnen, die aber keine Schwierigkeit darstellen. Es kommen einige Zuläufe in den rechten Zulauf der Ochsenschlucht. Der rechte Zulauf besteht aus relativ langen Geh- und Abkletterpassagen, ist aber auf Grund der schönen Landschaft und des klaren Wassers, das sukzessive immer mehr wird durchaus schön. Erst in den letzten 500m des rechten Zuflusses, bevor der linke Zufluss dazukommt schneidet sich die Schlucht immer enger ein. Tourenbeschreibung linker Zulauf bis Zusammenfluss: ca 0,5h (Erstbegehung Mai 2020) Mit dem linken Zulauf erspart man sich einige Meter Bachbettwanderung, ehe man zum interessanteren Teil der Ochsenschlucht kommt. Zu Beginn werden kleinere Stufen abgeklettert, es folgt eine Abseilstelle or. links mit 5-7m (nicht im Topo eingezeichnet), nach einer weiteren Gehstrecke kommt man dann zu einem kurzen Abseiler von einem Baum. Dann hat man ca. 400m Gehstrecke vor sich, ehe sich die Schlucht merkbar einschneidet und man zu einer kleinen Kaskade kommt. Die ersten 3 m können noch abgeklettert oder vorsichtig gerutscht werden, ehe man or. rechts zu einem Bohrhaken kommt. Man seilt sich in den 2. Gumpen und kann die letzte 3m-Stufe rutschen. Dann kommt auch schon der rechte Zulauf dazu und man steht direkt vor der interessanten ersten Stelle des oberen Zulaufs. Tourenbeschreibung ab Zusammenfluss bis Begin unterer Teil: ca 1,5h Der Zusammenfluss zwischen rechten und linkem Zufluss stellt die erste sehr schöne, aber wassertechnisch anspruchsvolle Stelle dar. Durch den Zusammenfluss verdoppelt sich auf einmal die Wassermenge und man muss in einen tieferen, turbulenten Gumpen um den Abseiler or. li. aufzubauen. Der Abseiler führt durch einen turbulenten Gumpen eher man direkt im Wasser abseilen muss. Es empfiehlt sich bei dieser Stelle einen geschlossenen Kreis aufzubauen, weil der Wasserdruck durchaus hoch ist. Gleich danach folgt eine weitere Kaskade, die bei einem Kettenstand or. rechts beginnt. Danach muss man den Bach mit durchaus starker Strömung queren, ehe sich or. links beim Felsband ein Bohrhaken befindet. Nach diesen 2 Highlights folgt eine relativ lange Geh- und teilweise Schwimmpassage in einer Schlucht mit eindrucksvoller Geologie. Je weiter man die Ochsenschlucht hinunter geht, desto mehr Quellen und Zuflüsse münden in die Ochsenschlucht, die sie im unteren Teil zu dem aquatischen Canyon macht. Deswegen sind auch gewisse Stellen im oberen Teil der Schlucht nicht zu unterschätzen (Prallwand, Strömungen). Im Vergleich zum unteren Teil ist jedoch die Wasserproblematik überschaubar. Gegen Ende des oberen Teils der Schlucht verengt sie sich erneut und man muss sich teilweise in turbulentere Gumpen abseilen bzw. diese durchqueren. Bei Hm 850 kommt or. rechts ein Geröllfeld in die Schlucht. Sollte es bis dahin schon Probleme mit dem Wasser gegeben haben, sollte man hier aussteigen. Da man im unteren Teil praktisch keine Fluchtmöglichkeiten mehr hat. Dieses Geröllfeld markiert gleichzeitig auch den Beginn des unteren Teils der Ochsenschlucht (siehe separate Beschreibung).

Tour description right approach to confluence: approx. 1.75h The right approach is characterized by a very beautiful open hiking gorge with a few rappels inside, but these are not difficult. There are several tributaries in the right-hand tributary of the Ochsenschlucht. The right-hand approach consists of relatively long walking and downclimbs, but is quite beautiful due to the beautiful scenery and the clear water, which gradually becomes more and more. Only in the last 500m of the right tributary, before the left tributary joins it, does the canyon become narrower and narrower. Tour description left tributary to confluence: approx. 0.5h (first ascent May 2020) The left approach saves you a few meters of streambed walking before you reach the more interesting part of the Ochsenschlucht. At the beginning, smaller steps are downclimbed, followed by a rappel point or left with 5-7m (not marked in the topographic view), after another walking passages you come to a short rappel from a tree. Then you have about 400m of walking passages ahead of you before the canyon cuts in noticeably and you come to a small cascade. The first 3 m can be downclimbed or carefully slid before you come to a bolt on the right. You rope into the 2nd pool and can slide the last 3 m steps. Then you come to the right-hand approach and stand directly in front of the interesting first section of the upper approach. Tour description from the confluence to the start of the lower section: approx. 1.5 hours The confluence of the right and left tributaries is the first very beautiful, but technically challenging section. Due to the confluence, the water volume suddenly doubles and you have to enter a deeper, turbulent pool to set up the rappel ortographic left. The rappel leads through a turbulent pool and you have to rappel directly in the water. It is advisable to set up a closed circle at this point because the water pressure is quite high. This is immediately followed by another cascade, which begins at a chain anchor on the right. You then have to cross the stream with a strong current before you reach a bolt on the left at the rock ledge. These 2 highlights are followed by a relatively long walking and partly swimming passage in a canyon with impressive geology. The further you go down the Ochsenschlucht, the more springs and tributaries flow into the Ochsenschlucht, making it an aquatic canyon in the lower part. For this reason, certain sections in the upper part of the canyon should not be underestimated (baffle wall, currents). Compared to the lower part, however, the water problems are manageable. Towards the exit of the upper part of the canyon, it narrows again and you sometimes have to rappel into more turbulent pools or cross them. At 850m, a boulder field enters the canyon on the right. If there have been problems with the water up to this point, you should get out here. There are practically no escape routes in the lower part. This boulder field also marks the beginning of the lower part of the Ochsenschlucht (see separate description).

(zu Fuß: 45min.) Wer den unteren Teil der Schlucht nicht begehen will muss bei 850 Hm or. rechts. zuerst das Geröllfeld hoch ehe man nach ca 15 - 20 min bei der Forststraße rauskommt. Hat man hier kein Auto geparkt so geht man sicher 45min – 1h bis zum unteren Parkplatz oder 30min bis 45min ehe man zur Schranke kommt wo die Autos für den oberen Teil abgestellt werden müssen
