Auf der A-14 die Adria entlang nach Süden bis Pescara. Bei Pescara-Süd /Francavilla die Autobahn verlassen und Richtung Chieti fahren. Bei Ripa Teatina (bis dahin 9,4 km) geht es nicht mehr in Richtung Chieti, sondern über die gut ausgebaute SS-81 südostwärts in Richtung Guardiagrele. Nach ca. 19 km gabelt sich die Straße und man nimmt den rechten Ast hinauf nach Bocca di Valle (ca. 6 km). Von hier sind es dann noch 3,5 km bis Pennapiedimonte. Bei der ersten und obersten Ortseinfahrt (Wegweisung Balzolo) fährt man von der SS-263 rechts ab und kommt nach wenigen hundert Metern zu einem kleinen Platz, wo die öffentliche Straße endet. Hier stellt man das obere Auto ab (720 m ü.NN).Mit dem zweiten Fahrzeug fährt man auf der SS-263 weiter bergab in Richtung Palombaro und erreicht nach etwa 5km die Ponte Avella. Hier kann man nicht nur das Fahrzeug abstellen, sondern auf dem Picnicplatz (mit Trinkwasseranschluss) gut übernachten.Hat man nur ein Auto verfügbar, so gibt es einen bequemen Fußweg hinauf zur Ortschaft: Dieser biegt ca. 200 m von der Brücke entfernt links von der SS-263 ab und führt hinauf nach Pennapiedimonte und zum darüberliegenden Ausgangspunkt der Tour. Dabei ist es egal, ob man bei der 2. Abzweigung links oder geradeaus geht.
Take the A-14 along the Adriatic Sea south to Pescara. At Pescara-South /Francavilla leave the highway and drive in the direction of Chieti. At Ripa Teatina (9.4 km by then), instead of heading towards Chieti, take the well-built SS-81 southeast towards Guardiagrele. After about 19 km the road forks and you take the right branch up to Bocca di Valle (about 6 km). From here it is another 3.5 km to Pennapiedimonte. At the first and highest entrance to the village (signposted Balzolo), turn right off the SS-263 and after a few hundred meters you will come to a small square where the public road ends. Here you can park the upper car (720 m above sea level) and with the second car you continue downhill on the SS-263 in the direction of Palombaro and after about 5 km you reach Ponte Avella. If you only have one car available, there is a convenient footpath up to the village: this turns off the SS-263 to the left about 200 m from the bridge and leads up to Pennapiedimonte and the starting point of the tour above it. It does not matter whether you go left or straight ahead at the 2nd junction.

Vom Parkplatz oberhalb Pennapiedimonte folgt man dem für öffentlichen Verkehr gesperrten Sträßchen, kommt bald durch einen Tunnel und hat schöne Blicke auf die Majellagipfel und die links unten liegende Avello-Schlucht. Unter der Piste läuft eine Wasserleitung und so steigt sie meist mäßig und gleichmäßig an. Nach einiger Zeit fällt sie wieder, man durchwandert einen weiteren Tunnel und nähert sich dem Schluchtgrund. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite sieht man den Fosso Selvagrande herunterziehen. Etwa 100 m nach Eintritt der Straße in den Wald sucht man linkerhand nach Fußspuren, die zum Avello hinabführen. Man kommt knapp unterhalb eines 12-m-Wasserfalls zur Bachsohle (ca. 730 m ü.NN) - 1¼ Std..Hinweis: Man kann auch weiter oben einsteigen - Valle Tre Grotte (zusätzlich 70 Min im Abstieg) - indem man dem Sträßchen folgt bis zum Picnicplatz von Linaro (850 m ü.NN) und gegebenenfalls noch 200 m weiter (880 m ü.NN).
Auch ein Zustieg über den Fosso Selvagrande ist möglich.
From the parking lot above Pennapiedimonte, follow the small road that is closed to public traffic, soon pass through a tunnel and enjoy beautiful views of the Majella peaks and the Avello canyon below on the left. A water pipe walks under the track and so the path climbs moderately and evenly most of the time. After a while it drops again, you walk through another tunnel and approach the bottom of the gorge. On the opposite side, you can see the Fosso Selvagrande coming down. About 100 m after the road enters the forest, look to the left for footprints leading down to the Avello. You come to the streambed just below a 12 m waterfall (approx. 730 m a.s.l.) - 1¼ h. Note: You can also start further up - Valle Tre Grotte (additional 70 min on the descent) - by following the little road to the picnic area of Linaro (850 m a.s.l.) and possibly another 200 m further on (880 m a.s.l.).
Access via the Fosso Selvagrande is also possible.

4 km lange tief eingeschnittene, fast durchweg enge Schlucht mit vielen kleinen Abseil- oder Abkletterstellen. Einige Sprung- und Rutschmöglichkeiten, insbesondere, da kiesiger Untergrund (prüfen!). Schwierigkeiten durch verkeiltes Holz und Wurzelwerk, gegebenenfalls auch bei viel Wasser (Schneeschmelze an heißen Tagen im Juni und Juli!). Im unteren Teil Engrinne mit 10-20 cm Sohlenbreite (nötigenfalls darüberklemmen).Etwa in der Mitte der Schlucht die einzige größere Aufweitung, aber Notausstieg hier nur für gute Kletterer möglich - Steinschlaggefahr. Sehr empehlenswerter Canyon. Eventuell zu verbinden mit Valle Selvaromana (vgl. Figlie dell'Acqua e del Tempo - M2b) oder für Extreme mit Valle dell'Inferno (vgl. Figlie dell'Acqua e del Tempo - M2c und Canyons & Gole 1' Nr. 23).
4 km long, deep, almost entirely narrow canyon with many small rappels and downclimbs. Some jumps and slides, especially as the ground is gravelly (check!). Difficulties due to wedged wood and roots, possibly also with a lot of water (snowmelt on hot days in June and July!). In the lower part, a narrow channel with a base width of 10-20 cm (if necessary, clamp over it), the only major widening in the middle of the canyon, but an emergency exit here is only possible for good climbers - danger of falling rocks. Highly recommended canyon. Possibly to be combined with Valle Selvaromana (see Figlie dell'Acqua e del Tempo - M2b) or for extremes with Valle dell'Inferno (see Figlie dell'Acqua e del Tempo - M2c and Canyons & Gole 1' No. 23).
