πŸ“± OpenCanyon App

Every canyoner knows the situation. You've prepared well, studied the map and canyon carefully, and then spontaneously decided on a different canyon on site, which turned out to be less well prepared. During the access or in the canyon, issues arise where more detailed information would be helpful.

To make sure you always have this information with you offline, we created the Opencanyon app. Over the months, it has been expanded and enhanced with minor adjustments, but in principle, it is designed so that you can carry the entire and current Opencanyon data treasure trove in your pocket, always offline, and access it whenever you need it.

The Opencanyon app is built on Angular/Capacitor, published for Android and iOS, and directly connected to the Opencanyon API.

Good to know

  • The Opencanyon app deliberately only updates offline data on command. To start this, please click on Settings -> Database -> Manual Update.

  • You cannot change (most) of the data for a canyon in the app; please use the Opencanyon website for this.

  • There are currently no plans to integrate an offline map into the app. This is for technical and financial reasons. You can work around this by either opening the coordinates of a canyon with an existing offline map (Organic Maps, Lotus Maps, etc.) or downloading the KMZ/GPX file for each country from the website and importing it into your offline map.

  • If you want to record hikes directly in the app, you can log in with your existing user account or create an Opencanyon user account in the app.

  • If you have any questions or requests regarding the app, you can report them directly in the app under Feedback or via Slack (see also https://www.opencanyon.org/contact).

Current feature overview of the app

  • Offline access – all information even without an internet connection or when abroad

  • Intuitive map search – discover canyons by map

  • Name search – search specifically for canyon names

  • Flexible filters – by rating, country, duration, number of rappelling points, and difficulty level

  • Comprehensive details – key data, descriptions, GPS coordinates, links, photos, and previous ascents

  • Direct navigation – open coordinates in Apple Maps, Google Maps, Organic Maps, or Swisstopo

  • Latest ascents – stay up to date with newly added canyons

Description

Canyoneer https://apps.apple.com/de/app/canyoneer/id1604449898

Uses data from Ropewiki.com, offline capable, only available on iOS, last update just under a year ago, data licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0

The app is being developed at https://github.com/bricepollock/canyoneer. We briefly considered whether we should work together on an app, but have currently rejected this idea due to time constraints.

DCV Canyoning App https://deutschercanyoningverein.de/dcv-topographic-view-app/

Uses data from OpenCanyon.org, offline capable, only available on Android, currently no longer available in the Google Play Store, data and app have not been updated for some time, data licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

The app was built as a Google Firebase app for DCV members. With the migration to Opencanyon data, anyone who wants to can access the app. APK is still available for download, e.g. here https://www.google.com/search?q=%22DCV-Canyoning+App%22+APK The data from Opencanyon was last updated over a year ago. If you want the latest data, you should simply use the latest Opencanyon app instead.

Canyoning App https://www.canyoningapp.com/

Standalone web app, particularly popular in Spanish-speaking countries. Unfortunately, the data is currently under a non-free license. For details, see the Terms of Use.

Once the first major offline canyoning app for Android, it has since been converted to an online web app and is therefore no longer available offline. The old APK for the app can still be found on Google, but unfortunately the data there is no longer up to date.

Canyon Explore https://www.canyon-explore.com/

Recently launched canyoning app, offline capability, topographic generator, map integration, available for iOS and Android. Unfortunately, the data is currently under a non-free license; see Terms of Use for details. Currently contains very few canyons and routes.

The app can be found at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.canyoningworld.canyonexplore or https://apps.apple.com/us/app/canyon-explore/id6744563487. The topographic view generator is currently available here: https://topo-creator.canyon-explore.com/ A brief consultation has revealed that the app is intended as a commercial project, which unfortunately excludes the use of Opencanyon data as a data source.
