Summary:
A diverse canyon that will be hard to find its equal, and is certainly one of the great highlights of the Salzkammergut. It is divided into three distinctive parts. The first third is a comfortable hiking canyon with a few abseils. Immediately, however, the character changes dramatically, because wild rappel passages follow in the canyon, which becomes narrower and narrower. The last third is again rather horizontal but very narrow and with some swimming passages. Overall, an extremely impressive tour that should not be underestimated. On the one hand, the crossing takes a relatively long time and on the other hand, it is only allowed to get in when the water level is low. In 1999 there has already been a spectacular helicopter rescue operation. After the first third there is no exit possibility! The protection can be described as very good at the high rappelling points, but there are a few small climbing passages that are not equipped.\nUnfortunately, the RussbachCanyon has been disfigured in the lower, beautifully cut part, by a high ropes course (via ferrata). On nice weekends, the masses move through the canyon, so beware of stones kicked loose, especially at the first (from the point of view of the canyoneers) bridge that leads over the canyon. After that, the via ferrata goes through scree terrain with loose stones.
