Talseite: Wenn man aus Richtung Cluses oder von der Autobahn kommt, gibt es in Magland mehrere Parkmöglichkeiten (Friedhof, hinter der Kreuzung zum Gewerbegebiet und – sofern verfügbar – am besten beim Rathaus, links in einer Einbuchtung; dieser Parkplatz ist etwas abgeschirmter und der Rückweg führt gerade so dorthin). Von oben kommend: Auf der N205 in Richtung Cluses, an der Kreuzung von Balme rechts auf die D106 in Richtung Arâche, Les Carroz, Flaine abbiegen. In Les Carroz auf dem Parkplatz hinter dem Hotel Arbaron oder gegenüber auf dem Parkplatz der Kapelle parken. (Sie befinden sich mitten im Dorf, verhalten Sie sich unauffällig.)

Valley side: If you’re coming from Cluses or the highway, there are several parking options in Magland (at the cemetery, behind the intersection leading to the industrial park, and—if available—ideally at City Hall, on the left in a recess; this parking spot is somewhat more secluded, and the return route leads right back there). Coming from above: On the N205 toward Cluses, turn right at the Balme intersection onto the D106 toward Arâche, Les Carroz, and Flaine. In Les Carroz, park in the lot behind the Hotel Arbaron or across the street in the chapel parking lot. (You’ll be right in the middle of the village, so try to keep a low profile.)

Von der Brücke aus folgt man dem Bach so weit wie möglich durch die Gemeindewiese; dort können Ponys sein, tagsüber allerdings selten, und die Besitzer sind nett. Man kann sich beim Betreten des Baches umziehen, je nach Wasserstand allerdings nur die Unterbekleidung.

From the bridge, follow the stream as far as possible through the community meadow; there may be ponies there, though they’re rarely seen during the day, and the owners are nice. You can change clothes when you enter the stream, though depending on the water level, you may only be able to change into your underwear.

Langer Spaziergang im Bach, bei dem man kleine „natürliche“ Dämme überwinden muss, die hauptsächlich aus alten Reifen, Baumstämmen und diversem Geröll bestehen. Es ist wirklich bedauerlich, dass ein renommierter Ort etwas, das eigentlich eine Touristenattraktion sein könnte, als Müllhalde missbraucht, ganz zu schweigen davon, dass all das eines Tages in Magland landen wird. Endlich erreichen wir die ersten Wasserfälle, oft natürliche Ankerpunkte, die mal vorhanden sind, mal nicht (die Gurte und Kettenglieder wurden kürzlich angebracht und sind in gutem Zustand). Die C39 wird ein wenig überbewertet. Keine nennenswerten Veränderungen beim Vorbeiführen an der Kläranlage festgestellt. Der Ausstieg nach der C18 ist ebenfalls nicht sehr offensichtlich. Abgesehen von einigen Engstellen sollte es jedoch einfach sein, sich mithilfe der zahlreichen Bäume aus dem Wasser zu begeben. Am Fuße der C38 gibt es eine gute, gut ausgestattete Plattform zum Seilabrollen, für eine eventuelle Führung usw.; allerdings besteht ein hohes Risiko, dass sich das Seil beim Abseilen in einer kleinen Spalte im Fels verklemmt. (Ein Tipp für den letzten Abseiler: Klemmt einen Ast in diese Spalte, um zu verhindern, dass das Seil dort hindurchläuft, und seilt euch ganz rechts ab; der Aufstieg am Seil ist ziemlich mühsam.) Es folgen zwei Möglichkeiten: Entweder teilt man die erste C60 in zwei 30er auf (indem man am linken Ufer seilt), was vorzuziehen ist, da ein hohes Risiko für Verhakungen aller Art besteht, oder man seilt in einem Zug bis zu einem Baum am linken Ufer ab. Es folgt die letzte C60, die euch bis zum Fuß des letzten Wasserfalls hinunterführt … Puh. Der letzte Abschnitt ist natürlich sehr anspruchsvoll; es gibt keine andere Möglichkeit als das Abseilen, insbesondere im C38 (im Notfall sollte man vor allem vermeiden, das Seil einzuklemmen, da es noch dringend benötigt wird) Was den Beginn der Tour angeht: Wenn die Fluchtwege kaum oder gar nicht erkennbar sind, sollte es einfach sein, sich vor Hochwasser in Sicherheit zu bringen. Ein paar Meter Seil mehr, um Reibungsverluste auszugleichen, sowie ein paar Meter Seil zum Zuschneiden und Karabiner, um die Seile gegebenenfalls an Bäumen zu befestigen.

A long walk along the stream, during which you have to cross small “natural” dams made mainly of old tires, tree trunks, and various debris. It’s truly regrettable that a renowned town is misusing what could actually be a tourist attraction as a dumping ground—not to mention that all of this will end up in Magland one day. We finally reach the first waterfalls, which often serve as natural anchor points—sometimes they’re there, sometimes they’re not (the straps and chain links were recently installed and are in good condition). The C39 is a bit overrated. No notable changes were observed as we passed the wastewater treatment plant. The exit after the C18 is also not very obvious. Apart from a few narrow spots, however, it should be easy to get out of the water with the help of the numerous trees. At the base of C38, there is a good, well-equipped platform for unrolling the rope, for a possible guide, etc.; however, there is a high risk that the rope will get jammed in a small crevice in the rock while rappelling. (A tip for the last person rappelling: Wedge a branch into this crevice to prevent the rope from running through it, and rappel all the way to the right; the ascent on the rope is quite arduous.) There are two options from here: Either split the first C60 into two 30s (by rappelling down the left bank), which is preferable since there’s a high risk of snags of all kinds, or rappel in one go down to a tree on the left bank. Next comes the final C60, which takes you down to the base of the last waterfall… Phew. The final part is, of course, very challenging; there’s no alternative to rappelling, especially on the C38 (in an emergency, you should above all avoid getting the rope caught, since it’s still urgently needed). As for the start of the route: If the escape routes are barely visible or not visible at all, it should be easy to get to safety in case of high water. A few extra meters of rope to compensate for friction loss, plus a few meters of rope to cut to size and carabiners to secure the ropes to trees if necessary.

Am Fuße der C70 folgen Sie dem Bachbett einige Meter bis zu einer Fußgängerbrücke (mögliche Wege am rechten Ufer). Überqueren Sie die Fußgängerbrücke und folgen Sie am linken Ufer einem markierten Naturlehrpfad, der Sie zum Parkplatz flussabwärts führt.

At the foot of the C70, follow the streambed for a few meters until you reach a pedestrian bridge (there are possible paths along the right bank). Cross the pedestrian bridge and follow a marked nature trail along the left bank, which leads you downstream to the parking lot.

Die Strömung von unten betrachtet ist nicht besonders stark; sie kam uns nicht „böse“ vor, aber in den letzten Steilabschnitten macht sie trotzdem ganz schön zu schaffen. In den Becken, in denen man immer noch Boden unter den Füßen hat, gibt es keine besonderen Probleme mit dem Wasser. Zwischen oben und unten gibt es keinen Unterschied in der Strömung. Am besten einige Tage nach dem Regen oder im Frühling bei der Schneeschmelze befahren; im Sommer ist der letzte Abschnitt oft trocken.

Viewed from below, the current isn’t particularly strong; it didn’t seem “dangerous” to us, but it still makes things quite challenging in the final steep sections. In the pools where you can still touch the bottom, there are no particular problems with the water. There’s no difference in the current between the upper and lower parts. It’s best to paddle a few days after it rains or in the spring during the snowmelt; in the summer, the last part is often dry.
