Summary:
This is a low-flow canyon. The first section, consisting of a large boulder field wedged between high walls, is not very interesting. The remainder is more pleasant, featuring well-carved waterfalls with pools that are not very deep.
Access:
From Piedimulera, go up the Anza Gorge. About 1 km after the village of Vanzone, turn right towards Canfinello. Park at the hamlet.
Approach (1 h 30):
Take the trail to Alpe Col. From there, follow the path to Rotela, then continue along the track leading to the ruined houses of Loccia. From these houses, continue traversing the slope while following the 1,500 m contour line and reach the canyon via a small tributary (it may be useful to rig rappels from trees to access it safely). The access route is rather difficult to find.
Tour (5 h):
In the canyon bed, which is cluttered with huge boulders, you must look for the best passage to reach a constriction between impressive rock walls. Two 30 m rappels and one 13 m rappel allow you to pass through this narrow section. A few obstacles interrupted by scree slopes lead to the most interesting part. The waterfalls follow one another more continuously, and the rappels are pleasant and easy. When the canyon was first explored, the pools were shallow, but floods may have changed this situation. The arrival at the flood-control structures marks the end of the descent. It is certainly possible to shorten part of the approach walk and avoid the upper section of the canyon by looking for an access route below the rocky bars from downstream, around the 1,200 m elevation.
Return (30 min):
Follow a path on the left bank that runs alongside the channelized section and rejoins the road to Canfinello.
