Von Ierapetra westwärts am Meer entlang (selten zu sehen) nach Myrtos (14 km). An der Ortschaft vorbei wendet sich die Straße (Nr. 97) Richtung Ano Viannos ins Landesinnere und zieht bergan. Nach 24 km kommen wir nach Ano Viannos und fahren durch den Ort weiter auf der Hauptstraße. Etwa 2 km nach Ortsende - wir haben Kato Viannos zur Linken passiert - biegen wir links ab in Richtung Hondros, Keratokambos. Nach 3 km durchfahren wir Hondros und gut 500 m weiter steht am linken Straßenrand eine Kirche auf einem Platz über dem Schluchteingang. Hier werden wir das obere Fahrzeug abstellen. Vorerst geht es jedoch mit beiden Fahrzeugen noch 8,5 km hinunter nach Keratokambos am Meer. Wir fahren noch rund 400 m am Meer entlang Richtung Arvi, biegen dann am Ortsende links ab und fahren noch einmal rund 100 m nach Norden. Wo die Straße nach Osten abknickt und von Norden eine Piste zuläuft, stellen wir das untere Fahrzeug bei einer großen Kapelle ab. Hier kommen wir letztlich immer vorbei, ob wir jetzt den letzten Teil des Portella noch mit erledigen oder nach dem zweiten attraktiven Abschnitt aussteigen.\n \nMit dem anderen Fahrzeug wieder zurück und hinauf zur Kirche. Dort parken.

From Ierapetra westwards along the sea (rarely seen) to Myrtos (14 km). Past the village, the road (no. 97) turns inland towards Ano Viannos and climbs uphill. After 24 km we reach Ano Viannos and continue through the village on the main road. About 2 km after the end of the village - we have passed Kato Viannos on the left - we turn left towards Hondros, Keratokambos. After 3 km we pass through Hondros and a good 500 m further on there is a church on the left-hand side of the road in a square above the entrance to the gorge. We will park the upper vehicle here. For the time being, however, we drive 8.5 km with both vehicles down to Keratokambos by the sea. We drive another 400 m along the sea towards Arvi, then turn left at the end of the village and drive another 100 m north. Where the road bends to the east and a dirt road runs in from the north, we park the lower vehicle at a large chapel. We always end up here, whether we do the last part of the Portella or get out after the second attractive part.\n \nReturn with the other vehicle and drive up to the church. Park there.

Von der Kirche steigen wir zuerst nordwärts, dann in einen Rechtsbogen hinunter zum Bach und zum Beginn der Einschluchtung. Wenn man den mit Plastik-Unrat gefüllten Gumpen und den Siphon in Abschnitt I vermeiden will, was sich empfiehlt, nimmt man einen weglosen Zustieg, der hinter der Kapelle beginnt und dann rechts haltend hinunter führt. Zwischen dem 3. und 4. Abfall erreicht man so den Bach.

From the church, first climb northwards, then descend in a right-hand bend to the stream and the beginning of the gorge. If you want to avoid the pool filled with plastic garbage and the siphon in Part I, which is recommended, take the pathless access that starts behind the chapel and then descends keeping to the right. You will reach the stream between the 3rd and 4th drop.

Wenn der Siphon im mittleren Teil wirklich siphoniert - was nur bei Hochwasser zu erwarten ist - wäre ein Durchtauchen wegen der dann starken Strömung und der unmittelbar folgenden C25 gefährlich. Dafür ist an der linken Wand die Möglichkeit des Überkletterns (mit Einrichtung eines Handlaufs vorgesehen - aber nicht ganz einfach! (2022 war das Seil nur um einen "Stalagtit" gewickelt und konnte abrutschen - nicht voll ins Seilgeländer hängen) Allerdings ist hier dann auch eine 50-m-Abseilstrecke zu bewältigen. Ansonsten wäre der längste Abseiler 35m. Beim ersten Abseiler im Abschnitt I sollte man vorsichtshalber ein Seil hängen lassen für einen evtl. nötigen Rückstieg, falls der Riegel über dem Siphon nicht zu erklettern ist (2008 fixierte Reepschnur vorhanden). Ebenso sollte man hier eine Trittschlinge bereit halten, um sich aus dem Hängen an der Sicherung wieder lösen zu können.

(In 2022, the rope was only wrapped around a "stalagtite" and could slip off - not hang fully into the rope traverse) However, a 50 m rappelling route must then also be mastered here. Otherwise, the longest rappel would be 35m. On the first rappel in part I, you should leave a rope hanging as a precaution in case you need to climb back down if the bolt above the siphon cannot be climbed (fixed rope available in 2008). You should also have a step sling ready here so that you can free yourself from the hanging belay.

Ausstieg nach Portela 1: Ausstieg, wenn die Schlucht sich zum ersten Mal von solidem Fels zu einem offenen Bachbett wandelt. Rechtsseitig bis zur Straße aufsteigen und dieser zurück zur Kirche folgen bei der man das Auto stehen hat. Oder weiter bis zu Portela 2 - ca. 500 m im Bachbett. Ausstieg nach Portela 2: Wir steigen nach dem Siphon, der sich nur bei viel Wasser auch als solcher darstellt und dem folgenden 24-m-Schrägabseiler und 50m weiter im Bach links hinaus. Wegfindung nach oben und dann an der Hangkante entlang etwas abwärts bis man auf eine alte Wasserleitung trifft. Dieser folgen bis man auf eine Schotterstraße trifft. Dieser durch einige Farmhäuser bis zum Auto folgen. Ausstieg nach Portela 3: Wir gehen auch noch den letzten Abschnitt Portela 3, der mit einem 25m-Trocken-Abseiler endet. Nach dieser 25m-Kaskade geht es dann links hinaus und nach etwa 500 m auf einer im Bogen nach Osten ziehenden Piste sind wir am Auto.

Exit after Portela 1: Exit when the canyon changes from solid rock to an open streambed for the first time. Climb up to the road on the right and follow it back to the church where you left your car. Or continue to Portela 2 - approx. 500 m in the streambed. Exit to Portela 2: Climb out to the left after the siphon, which only appears as such when there is a lot of water, and the following 24 m diagonal abseil and 50 m further on in the stream. Find the path upwards and then downwards along the edge of the slope until you come to an old water pipe. Follow this until you reach a gravel road. Follow this through some farmhouses to the car. Exit to Portela 3: We also walk the last part of Portela 3, which exits with a 25m dry rappel. After this 25m cascade, we turn left and after about 500m on a track that curves eastwards, we reach the car.
