Summary:
A narrow, very steep descent until the path widens and we reach the woodland.
January - December
Summary:
A narrow, very steep descent until the path widens and we reach the woodland.
Access:
We need to head to Santa Cruz de la Serós; to do this, we’ll take the N240 from Pamplona to Jaca. At kilometre marker 294.5, there’s a turn-off towards the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña. Follow this road for 4 km; you’ll pass through Santa Cruz and continue into the valley, following the course of the stream. When the road takes a very sharp left-hand bend and crosses a bridge over the river, you’ll see what looks like a water tank. This is the place to park your return car, or if you only have one car. Continue along the road to the monastery to park the car you’ll be using to get there.
Approach (1 h):
Access to the Torretones and Peña Yerma ravines From the monastery, we’ll set off along a track that climbs to the top of the ridge. We’ll follow this track as far as the Torretones, where we’ll turn right in search of our ravine (this part is a bit of a scramble), but the climb is very easy. From the bend in the road, we’ll take the Las Carboneras path, cross the stream and climb up to the pass. Once there, we’ll turn left towards the upper track and, before reaching Torretones, we’ll come across a narrow path marked by a few cairns that leads us to the head of the ravine. Please note: Peña Yerma and Torretones are very close together. Do make sure you don’t get them mixed up.
Tour (3 h):
A narrow, very steep descent until the path widens and we reach the woodland.
Return (30 min):
We’ll come across a path that leads us to the road
