Summary:
The Rio Loria is a succession of beautiful rappels in a canyon that is not very confined and only mildly aquatic. In low-flow conditions, the lower part of a wetsuit is sufficient. The descent can be divided into sections depending on the time available and the participants' skill level.
Summary:
The Rio Loria is a succession of beautiful rappels in a canyon that is not very confined and only mildly aquatic. In low-flow conditions, the lower part of a wetsuit is sufficient. The descent can be divided into sections depending on the time available and the participants' skill level.
Access:
From Domodossola, drive to Piedimulera and continue up the Anza Gorge as far as Castiglione. Leave a vehicle at the hamlet of Colombetti for the return shuttle. Before the bridge, take the road to Cresta and continue along the track past the houses until its end near a water reservoir.
Approach (15 min):
Follow the path toward Drocala; after about 15 minutes of walking, it crosses the canyon.
Tour (3 h):
The descent can begin upstream of the footbridge, where two waterfalls have been equipped with anchors. The first section consists of a succession of waterfall slides, more or less vertical, in a very open setting. As the descent progresses, the canyon gradually becomes more confined. Two walking sections precede a footbridge and an old mill. This point can also be reached via the trail connecting Selvavecchia and Drocala. The continuation toward Castiglione is narrower and darker, but presents no particular difficulties. At an elevation of about 525 m there is a water intake structure from which a trail on the left bank leads to Castiglione. At this point begins the final section of the route. Before reaching the main road through the Anza Gorge, it is necessary to descend in the streambed to find, beneath the bridge, the C48, the largest waterfall in the canyon. A few more rappels, including a C27, lead into the Anza Gorge in a magnificent setting.
Return (6 min):
Ascend the canyon back to the boulder chaos located before the C27 and take a small fishermen's trail on river right, which leads to Colombetti.
