June - October
Summary:
Open canyon, but with interesting passages and great abseils.
Access:
From the A26 highway, drive towards Domodossola and continue on the SS33 del Sempione. Take the exit for Crevoladossola and turn left towards Montecrestese. At the end of the straight road, turn left and drive uphill towards the village. After about 3 km, turn right towards Naviledo. Continue for a few more kilometers up to Altoggio. Turn left onto the road leading up towards Agarina (shortly after, the road becomes authorized access only; driving beyond this point risks a fine). The narrow road continues for several kilometers, with some unpaved sections. After the third set of hairpin turns, you will reach Alpe Agarina; park near a bridge along a flat stretch of road.
Approach (40 min):
Follow the road, which eventually turns into a mule track, until you reach the dam. Head towards the caretaker's house on the right, from which you can access the stream bed right below the dam.
Tour (2 h 30):
No particular technical difficulty. A few unequipped drops require downclimbing or natural anchors. Early in the season, snowfields may still be present.
Return (10 min):
When the canyon opens up significantly, continue along the stream bed and then across the meadows on the right until you reach the car.
Hydrology:
Dam with a lake at the start. The overflow spillway operates with an automatic mechanical opening system. If the lake level is high and a thunderstorm hits, it opens within seconds. You can ask the dam caretakers about the current water level.
