Just before the parking lot, take the trail that leads uphill to the left, follow it to the exit, and then turn right (there’s a small hut nearby) and head down the trail that leads to the Mât River (a variation of the GR R1). Cross the river and climb toward Grand Sable until you reach the fork in the trail leading to the “Source Pétrifiante”; follow this trail until you reach the start of the descent.

The canyon, which is quite wide at first, gradually narrows and becomes steeper as you pass through the rappelling sections. These can be secured when the water level is not high. There is a beautiful ledge at the entry of the final rappelling section—the “spider’s web”—which is the most spectacular part of the descent, even if it isn’t the highest. From there, it’s just a short walk over boulders to reach the Mât River. The belays are well-placed and are often doubled up in the cascade and “outside of flood season.” The narrow part appears to offer shelter. Beware of falling rocks (it might be better to wait after a rain shower until everything has dried before attempting the hike), as the last moderate tropical storm caused significant damage in the area (see the small lake that formed on the way back to the trail along the “Rivière du Mât”).
