Sintesi:
One of the most impressive canyons in Europe: beautiful ornate rock formations, sinter curtains, several holes and siphons, cold clear water (in spring), long cave-like canyon in complete seclusion, many climbing passages. Combination of Sa Fosca / Gorg Blau and hiking/trekking in Torrent de Pareis possible.
Accesso:
If returning on foot by Pareis leave a car in Port de Sa Calobra; beware that the last section of the town leading down to the sea has access control restriction for residents and authorized only. With the other car park near bar "Els Arcs". If not returning by Pareis, the return path will bring you back to "Restaurant d'Escorca" and from there you'll have 4km road till Els Arcs.
Avvicinamento (15 min):
From the parking follow the main road back in direction Escorca for just around 100m after the stone bridge where on the left a forest path branches off down to the stream right at the old building of the electric power station. Alternatively, you can enter via the Pas d'en Duro, which joins halfway down the canyon, just before the start of Sa Fosca. Follow the road back till Mirador de Sa Casa Nova / Mirador de s'Entreforc, 300m right before it you reach an iron gate in a wire mesh fence on the righthand side. Go through the gate and, keeping to the right, descend on a clear path. In the area of a steep meadow by an olive tree, turn left and descend across the meadow towards the saddle. In the saddle, after a brick shelter, turn right into the canyon where the first fixed rope is already installed. From here, about 300m of fixed ropes lead down to the bottom of the gorge, alternatively to the fixed ropes there are also abseiling points.
Giro (6 h):
The streambed begins partly flat with some small steps that can be bypassed or downclimbed. After a single pitch there are around 30min of walking and downclimbing but from there the canyon becomes more continuous. Each pitch can be rappelled, downclimbed, jumped or slid, depending on the water level/ability and after each one the canyon becomes more impressive and more incised. There is no need for artificial light until you reach the emergency exit on the right in the middle of the canyon, it is well equipped but difficult and lead vertically out of the canyon via iron stirrups and fixed ropes. From here starts the most mentally and physically demanding part, but also the most beautiful one - "Sa Fosca" (the darkness) - which will last 2 to 3 hours.. The canyon, especially the secon part, requires a water level that is not too high, as there are several narrow canyons, holes and siphons. The pitches are all optimally equipped with glued anchors or bolts, many places can be jumped or downclimbed (depending on the water level). After the last longer swim, the canyon opens up with a final pitch leading to the exit of the canyon. Daylight enters the Sa Fosca in a few places and the canyon gets the best light in the morning; due to the length and difficulty of the gorge, an early start is advisable.
Ritorno (2 h 30):
Once you exit the dark part reaching daylight again, climb the last sections into the shallow streambed. Sa Fosca / Gorge Blau meets the Torrente de Lluc / Pareis. If you take the left and follow Pareis for around 2h30 of hiking/trekking you'll reach the sea and the car parked in Port de Sa Calobra. If you take the right after about 10 minutes you will see a signpost with the path up to Escora. Very steep at first and afterwards in many serpentines through high grass will take you up to "Restaurant d'Escorca" and from there you'll have 4km road till Els Arcs.
