Giro ():
An alpine gorge, a right-hand tributary of the Torrente Albano, running parallel to but further south than the Val di Gromo. 23 abseils, equipped in a quick and exploratory manner, some using natural anchors, some via abseil, others with slings and maillons. A few things to bear in mind: 1) Abseil number 14 has been equipped with a single anchor on the right bank, quite a long way from the riverbed; to reach the anchor, you need to climb up through the undergrowth; at -15 there is a plate which we used as a diverter because, unfortunately, the bolt was loose, and the total length of the abseil is around 30–35 m. 2) C85: starts with a double anchor on the right bank; be careful where you position yourself as the plate without a ring has a bolt that rotates; there’s a fairly off-centre belay at -5 and the first split at -30 on a single bolt; from there, another abseil of about thirty metres takes you to the final split at -60, placed in a protected position; The final pitch is about 25 metres, almost all of it with water splashing over you, ending in a wide but very churning pool where one of our less ‘experienced’ companions struggled to get out. 3) Abseil no. 20 is a double abseil on a natural anchor that passes over two-thirds of a ledge; it’s not immediately obvious because the small tree is quite slender, but it’s in excellent condition and well away from the water flow. 4) Abseil No. 22 is undoubtedly the most spectacular: a double, unconnected anchor on the left bank, followed by a single 30-metre abseil right down to the bottom (watch out for chafing; this is particularly important for the last abseiler); viewed from the road on the opposite mountain, it looks like an unapproachable monster, but once you’re up there, you realise it’s much simpler than it seems. Sequence of abseils: 1) c5 double abseil on natural anchors on the left bank 2) c20 single abseil on the right bank 3) c15 single abseil on the left bank + 4) c10 single abseil on the left bank 5) c13 single abseil on the right bank 6) c15 on the left bank (slings and maillon on natural anchors) 7) c30 single on the left bank 8) c20 single on the left bank + 9) c8 single on the left bank 10) c20 double on the natural anchor on the left bank 11) c10 on the left bank (slings and maillon on the natural anchor) 12) c35 on the left bank (slings and maillon on the natural anchor) 13) c13 single, right bank 14) c35 single, right bank (well out) + deviation to -15 15) c15 single, right bank, c85 sequence 16) c30 double, right bank (linked) + deviation to -5 17) c30 single, right bank 18) c25 single, right bank 19) c15 single, right bank 20) c20 double on natural, right bank (passes 2/3 ledges) 21) c20 single, right bank 22) c30 double (unconnected), left bank (ponytail cascade) 23) 6m unbolted toboggan 24) c6, left bank (slack line and maillons on natural features) exit onto an easy path on the left bank at a water intake.
